Edwin was born on April 13, 1926 near Hay Lakes, Alberta, and was the fifth child of Rudolph and Julianna Schoenknecht. He attended school at Big Hay Lake, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. Edwin grew up in a family with good Christian values, hard work ethic, honesty and integrity. It was during his youth that he developed a deep love for farming. He would make it his lifelong career. Edwin was united in marriage to Elsie Schmidt on June 17, 1952 at Usona, Alberta. They were blessed with five children: Bonnie, Allan, Marilyn, Shelley and Doug. Edwin and Elsie took over the family homestead and together established a mixed farm that included a small dairy. He was active in the community of Hay Lakes with Boy Scouts, Church Council, Rural Crime Watch and the Lion's Club. Edwin also made time for fastball, curling, and coaching baseball and hockey. Edwin and Elsie retired to Camrose in 1992, however still maintained close ties to the Hay Lakes community. They enjoyed Sunday outings, visits with family and friends, senior activities, and travel. Edwin took great pride in his grandchildren, often giving them encouragement and advice. Edwin will be remembered for telling stories, his sense of humor, and a passion for family. Many fond memories and friendships were formed throughout his life. Edwin passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Camrose on Friday, March 13, 2015 at the age of 88 years.
