Obituary of Marie Stang

Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marie Elizabeth Stang of Camrose passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the age of 87 years. Marie was born to Edward and Magdalena Shermak in May 1928. She was the second eldest of five children. She married Florian Stang in 1948 and would have been married 52 years when Florian passed away in 2000. They spent a year and half as newlyweds in Daysland and during that time they had their only child Lorraine. They returned shortly after Lorraine's birth to Camrose and she and Florian built a home where they resided for their entire married life. Health issues in 2012 left Marie unable to care for herself so her residence became Sunrise Village Care Facility. Marie started working at Meraw's $.05 to $1.00 when she was 16 years old and worked at the store until it closed in 1973. She assisted many a family member or friend in selecting the perfect gift and ensured they were elegantly wrapped with a bow even if the gift was $.25. She spent several years at Mina's Gift shop on Main street before moving out of retail to an optical company. She learned a new skill making prescription eye glasses. She retired from this position when she turned 65. She was active at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Catholic Women's League which she joined in 1954. Many weekends and vacations were spent camping in the 60's in a tiny tent trailer and in the early 70's upgraded to a trailer with all the comforts of home. Marie discovered she loved to fish and was determined to catch a large salmon fishing off the pier in the Burrad Inlet in Vancouvr during a vacation there. Unfortunately, after several hours she was forced to give up by her fishing companions. Traveling to new destinations was a favorite thing for them to do. She and Florian traveled to Europe and then she and Florian discovered cruises. They took four cruises, one of which was the Panama Canal cruise on Princess Cruises. She also enjoyed vacations to Florida, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. Her hobbies included fancy needle work, ceramics painting and weaving. She also enjoyed playing cards and the board game Aggravation especially at family functions. She is predeceased by her husband Florian, and her brothers Edward and Joseph. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine; son-in-law Lyle Breland; her grandchildren Shane(Lori), Shawn (Margaret) and Simone; her great-grandchildren Tyler (Terri) and Morgan (Matt); and her great-great granddaughter Norah; her sisters Cecelia and Barbara; nieces and nephews. She will be missed by family and friends but they are assured she is at peace now. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2015 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating. Interment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Liver Foundation, to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, or to the charity of one's choice.
