Obituary of Lloyd Reed

Please share a memory of Lloyd to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lloyd Allan Reed was born August 16, 1925, the second of eight children, to Clifford and Myrtle Reed. At the age of nineteen, Lloyd joined the Calgary Highlanders and served his country overseas during World War II. Lloyd was severely injured in October 1944, as the Canadian Army fought in the Liberation of Holland. This never slowed him down. In February of 1949, Lloyd married Arlet Johnson of Kingman. They had five children Arlie, Dawn, Laverne, Rob and Darcy. Lloyd held a variety of jobs and was somewhat of an entrepreneur. On his decommissioning from the Army, he delivered telegrams for the CPR and started Veteran's Taxi, which operated out of the Alice Hotel. Eventually, Lloyd was hired to haul mail "down the Alliance Line" and picked up some casual work at MacPherson's Hardware Store in Alliance. He purchased land just outside of Camrose with help from VLA (Veterans Land Act) and this became both the family home and "Reed's Country Gardens" a family Greenhouse and Landscape business that grew from one Greenhouse attached to the house to a well-respected business throughout the region. In the early Greenhouse years, Lloyd also worked at Miller Electric. Lloyd loved to explore history, travel and meet people. He thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work for Bill Miner (Miner's Construction) in the northern communities of Resolute Bay, Spence Bay and Grise Fiord. Lloyd also loved the opportunity to gather at family reunions, explore the genealogy of the Reed and Aker families, and make ties with distant relatives. Lloyd and Arlet retired into Camrose in 1986. He kept busy by getting involved with War Amps, the Canadian Legion and the Sons of Norway. On June 5th, 2015, Lloyd passed away peacefully in the early morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife, Arlet; infant daughter, Laverne; brothers Elroy, Grant and Lorne; sister Mildred; daughter-in-law Grace. He will be missed and remembered by many, including his family: Children: Arlie (Steve) Cunningham, Dawn (Rick) Pryor, Rob (Susan), Darcy.
