Obituary of Peter Skretting

Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peter William Skretting was born to Trygve and Mildred Skretting on March 29, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, the youngest of their six children. His parents were faithful to teach their children to love Jesus and God's Word. Peter made these things his own priority early, and continued to love, serve and worship the LORD throughout his life. From an early age, Peter grew to love plants and flowers from spending time with Mildred in her garden. It was a joy and delight when he could watch his own gardens thrive and grow. Along with a love of gardening, his parents instilled in him an appreciation for birds. Sometimes late for suppers, he would be found in the coulee by their house, bird-watching. During his school years he enjoyed various sports, played in band and sang in choirs. Living close to the train tracks, Peter and his brothers would spend considerable time watching trains, keeping track of engine numbers and the different kinds of locomotives. These hobbies and interests played a prominent role throughout his life. He studied at Camrose Lutheran College and the U of A earning his BSc in chemistry. Settling in Edmonton as a young adult he began working at CN, a career that continued for 23 years. While attending Calvary Lutheran Church he met his future wife, Karen Dahlin, while singing in the church choir. Peter and Karen were married on August 2, 1986. They became parents to two children, Melissa and Matthew, even while entrusting three precious babies - Jessica, Kelcey and Janelle - to the LORD's loving arms. Peter was a loving husband and father who led his family with strength and integrity. He loved his children deeply and was proud of all they accomplished as they grew into adulthood. A highlight being the marriage of Matthew to Lisa Olson in July of 2014. Usually parents become empty-nesters when their children leave home. However, Peter and Karen, when their children were attending CLBI, moved to Leader, SK. Peter worked there as the general manager for the Great Sandhills Railway for four years before returning to his roots in Camrose, AB. While living in Camrose, Peter worked in various roles at the Battle River Railway based in Forestburg, AB. until his cancer diagnosis on March 1, 2015. He fought the cancer bravely and without complaint until his death on June 11, 2015. Peter was predeceased by three daughters- Jessica, Kelcey and Janelle; parents Trygve and Mildred; brothers Marvin and Donald; brother-in-law Rev. John Anderson; and father-in-law Widmer Dahlin. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Karen, children Melissa Skretting and Matthew (Lisa) Skretting; siblings George (Trish) Skretting, Marilyn Murray, Norman (MaryJane) Skretting, sister-in-law Katherine Skretting; mother-in-law Edna Dahlin, brother-in-law Dan (Kathy) Dahlin, sister-in-law Janice (Mark) Bauer and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Peter was brilliant and a very deep thinker. He had a quick, wry sense of humour and a bent for mischief. He spoke little but observed and loved much. He had a soft heart and a deep faith. Peter will be greatly missed, however his legacy lives on in the lives of those he touched. To God be the glory. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from Messiah Lutheran Church (4810-50 St Camrose, Ab). Interment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to CLBI, the Cross Cancer Institute, or to the charity of one's choice.
