Obituary of Dorothy Wright

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Dorothy Wright, born in Rapid City, Manitoba on February 4, 1930, late of Camrose, formerly of New Norway, passed away on July 17, 2015 at the age of 85 years. She is survived by her loving family: Stanley, her husband of 63 years; children - Doug (Mary) of Leduc, Murray (Leigh) of Edmonton, Colleen (Bill) of Ripley, ON and Corinne (Doug) of Edmonton; 5 grandchildren: Jodi, Melissa, Cassandra, Carson and Emma; and 2 great-grandchildren: Aiden and Amy; and one sister Evelyn (Owen Turner) of Gimli, MB. After growing up in Rapid City, she moved to Edmonton to take nurse's training at the Edmonton General Hospital. She met and married Stan in 1951 and moved to the farm near New Norway shortly after. Not only was she a farm wife, raised the family and took care of a huge garden each summer, but she also worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose for many years - working the night shift after putting the children to bed and getting home in time to send them off to school. Dorothy was a people person and there was always a warm welcome for family, friends and neighbours. Freshly baked goodies always accompanied a cup of coffee or tea and her Christmas baking was a special treat, whether it was hand delivered or came through the mail. When they retired from farming, Stan and Dorothy moved to Camrose where she volunteered for flu and immunization clinics and summer camps as the camp nurse. For years, she and Stan volunteered at the Big Valley Jamboree. She was also an avid cheerleader for the senior men's slow pitch team and curling team while Stan was playing. She enjoyed travelling, whether it was camping in their truck-camper, motorhome or fifth wheel where they went east to Prince Edward Island and west to Vancouver Island, cruising through the Panama Canal or touring through the United States, China, Europe and the British Isles. A visit from Mom/Grandma began with a super-sized smile and a warm hug. Family memories: the smell of cinnamon buns the children were met with when they came home from school, the summer days spent shelling endless tubs of peas, the pies for dessert, her love of entertaining and feeding whoever showed up around her large kitchen table, her cake decorating skills, Sunday afternoons in winter sitting around the table playing cards and board games, her love of bagpipe music, her sewing skills which produced matching outfits, her cross stitched handwork, and mostly, her love for her family are treasured. A sincere thank you is extended to the St. Mary's Hospital Unit 2 and Unit 5 and the Daysland Health Centre Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation Unit doctors, nurses and staffs for the compassionate, professional care Dorothy received. At Dorothy's request, no funeral will be held. An inurnment at Highland Park cemetery, near New Norway, has taken place on Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Donations are gratefully accepted and may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one's choice.
