Obituary of Catherine "Cathee" Young
Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Catherine Elizabeth (nee Cor) Young was born on September 12, 1960, in Cochenour, Ontario, the third child to Matt and Theresa Cor. She passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the age of 55 years.
The majority of Catherine's youth was spent growing up in Uranium City and Eldorado, Saskatchewan. Many fond memories were created there; building the cabin, swimming lessons, girls' hockey and the oh so memorable parties in the bush. She spent her youth outside as it was her favourite place to be. In 1974, following the death of her father, the family moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta. Cathee attended Archbishop Jordan High School.
In 1979, Cathee's first son, Nicholas, was born. In 1980, she had her second son, Réal. In 1987, she married the love of her life, John, and together they had two more sons; Jacob born in 1989 and Matija born in 1990. Many happy family times were spent vacationing, camping, and just being a family.
After they were married, John and Cathee lived in many places: Winterburn, Edmonton, Beaumont, Leduc and finally settling in Hay Lakes.
In June of 2004, Nicholas married Melissa Robins. In 2005, Taylor was born and Cathee became a grandma for the first time. In 2009, grandbaby #2, Jacob, was born. In September of 2014, Réal married Lisa Moravec.
Cathee studied Radio Broadcasting and completed her schooling in 1987/88. She worked in the trucking, retail and automotive industries, to name a few. Cathee was well diversified in many different careers and she was a jack-of-all-trades when it came to work. If she wanted to do it, she did, and she would work to be the best at any and all jobs she took on.
Over her life, Cathee was involved in many community minded organizations. A few of these included being the manager of the Leduc Otters Swim Club, being involved with Leduc Minor Football and serving as part of the Parent Council in Beaumont. She campaigned for the Alberta Lung Association, spent many years on the Board of the New Sarepta Hockey Association, as well as being a member of the Hay Lakes and District Lions Club.
Cathee had a love of many things, in particular travelling. She wanted to see the world, and with her husband by her side, she traveled whenever possible. One of her biggest desires was to go to Croatia and although it never became a reality, Cathee was able to see many beautiful places.
Some of the most important things to Cathee were good food, good friends and most importantly family. Cathee was a devoted sister, daughter, friend, mother, Grammie and wife. To know Cathee was to know true love and loyalty.
Cathee was always thinking of others. As a teenager, it started with inviting the lonely to Christmas dinners and it never slowed down. From driving seniors to appointments, cooking meals, listening, loaning anything to anyone in need, to sharing: her birthday, her family and her home. She had a huge heart.
Cathee is survived by her loving husband, John; four sons, Nicholas (Melissa) LaFrance, Réal (Lisa) LaFrance, Jacob and Matija Young; grandchildren, Taylor and Jacob LaFrance; brothers, Richard (Cathy) Cor of Falun, Michael (Lori) Cor of Sherwood Park; sisters, Angie (Ivan) Selin of East Hay Lakes, Colleen (James) Ewen of Sherwood Park; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Matija in 1974 and her mother Therese in 2010.
A Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 20, 2015, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Hay Lakes at 1 pm with Reverend Ron Chetney officiating. Interment followed at the Wilhelmina Lutheran Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Youth Emergency Shelter www.yess.org or to St. Mary's Hospital, 4607-53 Street, Camrose, AB, T4V 1Y5.
