Obituary of Alice Cross
Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alice Marguerite Cross of Kelsey passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, July 29, 2016 at the age of 77 years.
Alice was born to Stanley and Ruby Henry in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. She grew up there on a farm with her three siblings.
Alice married Ernie Cross in 1956 and they celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary in June of this year. They moved to Alberta, living in Bawlf for awhile, and eventually moving to the Cross farm east of Kelsey where they lived and raised their family.
She was a hardworking, selfless and loving mother, wife and neighbor who cared for her family above all else. She always thought of others and rarely came for a visit without bringing a bag of veggies, a dozen eggs, a homemade angel food cake, or for the grandkids, a jar of homemade dill pickles!
She grew the family's vegetables, raised chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys for special occasions and worked tirelessly on the farm with Ernie. Her favorite times were spent in her garden, spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, attending church with neighbor and closest friend, Anne Gregorwich, and visiting with neighbors. She worked at the old Bethany Long Term Care Centre when her children were small and most recently for the Edmonton Journal until retiring in 2004. She worked for the Journal for over ten years. Alice had the opportunity to meet many people while working for the Journal and made several good friends.
After she retired, she had more time to tinker in her greenhouse, growing flowers which decorated her yard and bloomed in splendour every year! She shared this love for gardening with all of her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed participating in the annual Camrose Horticultural Show, entering veggies and flowers in the various categories and encouraging all the kids to participate too. She would be beaming when the kids brought home ribbons and cash prizes! Some of her prize produce was even honored with pictures in the local paper.
Alice, will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her loving husband Ernie; her children, Carol (Jack) Westergard of Camrose, Brenda Wilson of Camrose, Marion (Arnold) Jacobson of Didsbury, Randy (Miranda) of Camrose, John (Christine) of Daysland, Cindy (Lyndon) Skjaveland of Ferintosh, Allyson (Dana) Braybrook of Bruderheim, and honorary daughter Tomoko Hara of Kyoto, Japan; her grandchildren, Jean (Clint) Heinish and Stephen Westergard, Brad (Jenn) Sieben, Janelle(Rob) McTavish and Michael (Amanda) Sieben, Kristi (Mark) Pearson and Darren (Leanne) Jacobson, Karina, Jenna, and Daniel Cross, Ryan, Ashley, and Alicia Cross, Starla (Shayne) Andres, Rachel (Tyson) Wiebe and Leikny Skjaveland, Zachary Twigge, Vanessa and Hayden Braybrook and Karin Hara; her great-grandchildren, Dustin and Jesse Heinish, Kara and Owen Westergard, Alyssa and Blake Sieben, Harper McTavish, Andrew and Cadel Pearson, Layla Jacobson, and Rowan Wiebe; sisters Muriel Cooper, Arlene Stach, and sister- in- law Shirley Henry.
