Obituary of Helen MacTaggart
Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marlene MacTaggart was born September 9, 1933 in Consort, Alberta, the eldest child of Chris and Velva Sortland. Marlene passed away peacefully on September 30, 2016 at the age of 83 years.
Marlene was the oldest of six children and raised in depression era Alberta. After graduating from Bowden High School, she completed the Secretarial Program at Mount Royal College and began work at Canada Life in Calgary. She moved to Edmonton to continue her career and met Bob MacTaggart on a blind date. They were married in 1959 and settled in Camrose where they spent the next 47 years until Bob's passing in 2007.
Together, Marlene and Bob raised three sons. Marlene devoted her life to caring for her family and was truly the centre of the MacTaggart clan. She was very proud of her boys' achievements and raised them to be independent and capable adults. Marlene loved her six grandchildren and they adored her.
In addition to keeping busy with her growing boys, Marlene was bookkeeper for the family sheet metal business until Bob retired in 1997. Marlene enjoyed family camping trips with her siblings and their families at campgrounds across Alberta. She loved gathering with her family for holidays and her cinnamon buns and jello "goop" were a tradition.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons Bob (Peggy) of Lacombe, Jim (Cindy) of Edmonton, Rick (Elaine) of Fort Saskatchewan; grandchildren Amy, Laura, David, Cameron, Aidan and Sophie; brothers Floyd (Glenna) Sortland of Victoria, B.C., Skip (Deborah) Sortland of England; sisters Brenda Ward of Innisfail, Lois Deneff of Innisfail; and sister in-law Deena Sortland of Tucson, AZ.
Marlene was predeceased by her husband Robert; brother Dale; brothers in-law Jim Ward, Bill Deneff; and parents Chris and Velva Sortland.
A Funeral Service was held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2016 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel. Interment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery.
If friends and family so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
