Obituary of Helen Campbell
Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen Esther Campbell of Edmonton, formerly of Camrose, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the age of 95 years.
Helen was born on the family farm in Minnedosa, Manitoba. She went to school in a one-room schoolhouse for grades 1-8, and worked for her room and board in Minnedosa in order to complete high school.
To her delight she was accepted into the Dauphin, Manitoba Hospital School of Nursing, and after graduating in 1943 she obtained her RN and worked in rural Saskatchewan. She went on to attend Covenant Bible Institute for three years, where she met her future husband, Cliff Campbell. They were married on October 5, 1951, and went on to serve Covenant Churches in the prairie provinces: Kinistino, Norquay/Hyas and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Minnedosa, Manitoba; and Camrose and Malmo, Alberta. Helen delighted in singing in church choirs, serving as a nurse at Bible camps, leading Bible studies for women, being part of Covenant Women, and ministering with Cliff to the hospitalized and shut-ins. She also continued nursing part-time in the communities in which they lived, where she was often asked to provide one-on-one care to patients from the local church or community.
Helen loved meeting and being with people - family, friends, neighbors, patients, acquaintances, and communicating with them in person, phone, and by letter; travelling by car, with Cliff driving, and relishing the scenery which her artistic eye so greatly appreciated and commenting on the beauty around her. The family would like to thank the staff at Touchmark in Edmonton for caring for Helen the last few years of her life, and to especially thank her companions Judy and Audrey for all the ways they brightened Helen's days.
Helen was predeceased by her parents Olof and Olivia Peterson, her husband Cliff (2005), and by her siblings, Martin, Carl, Agnes, Mary, Harold, Mabel, twin sister Hildur, and Olive.
She is survived by her children Hugh (Faith) of Kelowna, David of Edmonton, and Twyla (Doug) Fletcher of Edmonton; four grandchildren, Amie (Steven), Chantelle (Ryan), Connor and Alanna; and three great-grandchildren, Aya, Arwen and Paxten.
A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017 from the Malmo Mission Covenant Church, Wetaskiwin County, with Rev. Randall Friesen officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Malmo Cemetery.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Gideons (PO Box 3619, Guelph, ON N1H 7A2), or to World Relief (7 East Baltimore Street Baltimore, MD 21202).
