Thinking of Phil years later and I came back to this page to leave this message. Phil was one of the most remarkably compassionate, accepting, and open-minded individuals that I've ever had the pleasure to know. I only knew him for a short while as a student, but the impact he left on my outlook in life is astronomical. He was an amazing professor and I cried when I found out about his passing.

Dear Margaret, Family and Friends of Phil, I just heard of Phil's passing and am shocked. I haven't seen Phil since the liberal arts conference in Banff in 1996. I spent only a few years teaching along side Phil at Augustana but conversations with him remain vivid in my memory. We had many philosophical discussions, talks about teaching, and many debates regarding the Beatles vrs Stones. Somehow, Phil always came out on top. I am sincerely sorry for your loss and Phil will always remain an integral part of my life. Sincerely, Rod Michalko

Dear Margaret, and family I just heard of Phil’s passing; please accept my deepest condolences. I have great memories of Phil when we were students at the U of O – many good discussions and many good times. Even though I haven’t seen him – or you all – in the subsequent years, I’ve often thought about Phil and the interests that we shared. From mutual friends, I heard about the many things that Phil did, and about how he flourished at Augustana I will keep him – and you all – in my thoughts and prayers. All of us give our deepest sympathies to the family of an incredible man. Like my sister and best friend, I didn't come to Augustana to study philosophy. Yet after one class with Phil each of us were hooked and because of him, we all graduated with philosophy degrees. We felt so special to get to hang out with such an amazing guy outside of class. When I came back to teach at Augustana I felt the same way. Thank you Phil for all you gave us and all you did for us. (Also that you allowed me to graduate, even though only half my final paper, in my final course, made it to you from a rural, virus filled, internet cafe in rural Mexico. You never even told me there was a problem, just one of the many times you taught me about what is truly important. Thank You)

I'm so very sorry for your loss Margaret, Thomas and Emily. I remember short conversations I've had with Phil over the years and the one I remember the most was one about a Rolling Stones concert he was either just going to or had just been too. He really was a great person and great fan of the Stones. At this time of sorrow may you find comfort in your memories. Thinking of all of you with sympathy.

To Margaret, Tom, Emily, Lynda and Don, We were greatly saddened to learn of Phil's sudden illness - and then devastated to hear of his passing. Phil was one of my hose exceptional people who just shouldn't die. He offered so much to everyone. Words are not sufficient to express our feelings and to offer our sympathies. As time passes we hope the shock will ease and we can rejoice as we remember his life. It is uplifting to read the many remembrances of Phil at the U Alberta/Augustana web site: https://news.augustana.ualberta.ca/2017/06/augustana-mourns-beloved-professor/
