Audrey Jean Scheie of Camrose passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the age of 94 years.
Audrey Jean Webster was born in Keyworth, Nottingham England on April 17, 1923, a daughter to Cyril and Lillian Webster. Audrey Jean had two older siblings, Bob and Grace. As a young lady, Audrey Jean worked in the office at Boots Drug Co., and took shorthand and typing classes after work. She also worked as a secretary in the shire office. In 1942, she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, took her basic training in York and after more training in Scotland in shorthand and typing, was posted to the Chilwell Ordinance Depot as a secretary to the Garrison Legal Advisor. While she was in Scotland, she met Don Scheie and fell in love with him. They were married in June 1945 and Jean was discharged from the ATS. In 1946, Jean received one telegram stating that Don had been killed and another one informing her that it was her turn to be transported to Canada as a war bride. Bravely, she made the decision to see Canada and visit her husband's family, planning to return to England. Shortly after her arrival in Canada, Don's brother Gordon returned from the war. He was so much like Don, they quickly fell in love and were married in 1947. They had two children, a daughter Loretta and a son, Peter. In 1950 they bought a farm near Ohaton, where they lived until 1985 when they moved to Camrose. From 1967 until 1979, Audrey Jean worked as a legal secretary in Camrose. In 1975 Audrey Jean began playing as a substitute piano player in various bands and so she formed a band of her own. She also volunteered to play the piano and/or organ at the lodges in Camrose. In 1986 she was named Bethany's volunteer of the month. Besides her music, Audrey Jean's hobbies included Swimming, cycling, walking, painting, sewing and cross country skiing. There are many of her paintings hanging in the family home.
Audrey Jean was blessed with five grandchildren, Loretta and Darrel's sons Robert and Colin and Peter and Joan's daughters, Lisa, Carla and Traci. Now there are six great grandchildren, Ian and Ella, children of Lisa and Kirk Torneby; Jack, Stephanie, Griffin, children of Colin and Kim Anderson; and Connor, son of Robert Anderson. Audrey Jean's husband, Gordon, died in 2015, and since that time she has been a resident at Bashaw Lodge and until her death at Bethany Meadows in Camrose.
