Obituary of Lyle Sheets
Please share a memory of Lyle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mr. Lyle Harold Sheets of Kelsey passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the age of 80 years.
Lyle Harold Sheets was born on June 3, 1931 at Ohaton, Alberta. He was the third child of nine born to Hugh and Ragna Sheets. He grew up on the farm and found great joy in working with all of the animals, especially his team of goats. He enjoyed his school years at Horicon and Camrose. After school he worked on the pipeline and drilling rigs. He was happy to contribute some of his earnings to make sure everyone at home could enjoy some special comforts.
It was while he was working on the rigs that he met Janice Van Hullebush at North Battleford, Saskatchewan. They were married there on July 30, 1955. They moved back to the farm at Ohaton, Lyle worked for the Alberta Wheat Pool in Bawlf for one year. They moved to an acreage at Kelsey, Alberta where he took up the manager's position for the Wheat Pool for the next 31 years. He meticulously kept his books and his office in order and was a man of many organized "To Do Lists". Lyle and Janice spent many years attending local auction markets. He always enjoyed getting a good deal on a horse, and frequently dragged the odd piece of junk home much to Janice's frustration. He was well known on the pony chariot circuit around the province. He organized and enjoyed coaching various Kelsey ball teams. He and Janice were dedicated caretakers for the Kelsey Hall for 55 years. He was an avid supporter of, and strongly believed in, maintaining the small rural community. He took great pride in the appearance of his yard and the hamlet.
They had two children, a daughter Janine and a son Jerry. Janine and he spent many hours working with horses and coopering box cars at the elevator. Lyle and Jerry had many discussions about how loud a motorbike should be when you drive it. His greatest enjoyment was visiting and exchanging stories with the neighbours on a daily basis. Anyone and everyone were always welcome. He often held court in his big armchair in the living room and was known affectionately as the mayor of Kelsey. He enjoyed many sporting events from that chair on TV and was a huge supporter of the Edmonton sports teams.
His grandkids added a new dimension to his and Janice's world. Lyle and his grandkids maintained a mutual admiration society until his passing. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Janice of 56 years, his daughter Janine (Ken) Klevgaard, his son Jerry and grandchildren Martin (Jenn) Klevgaard, Kate Klevgaard and Annette Klevgaard, brother Don (Linda) Sheets, sisters Ruby (Dave) Hutchinson, Pat (Dave) Thompson and Helen (Burl) Adams. He was predeceased by his father Hugh, mother Ragna, brother Lloyd, infant brother Glen, brother Russell and sister Shirley.
A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating. Inurnment took place in the Camrose Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the charity of one's choice.
