Obituary of John Sampson
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With the sun on his face and surrounded by those he loved, Wayne Sampson of Camrose, AB, passed away after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Wayne was born in Halifax, NS, on June 20, 1946 to Anthony and Monica. He was the oldest of five children - Gail (Frank) of Bedford, NS; Terry (Geraldine) of Lower Sackville, NS; Lloyd (Glenda) of Dartmouth, NS; and Kevin (Lisa) of Dartmouth, NS. It was in Halifax that Wayne met the love of his life, Linda Milbury and they were married on January 24, 1969. Wayne and Linda lived in the Halifax area and raised two sons - Derek (Donna) of Edmonton, AB and Mark (Kerri) of Slave Lake, AB. In 1982, Wayne and Linda made a life changing decision and moved their young family to Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay) NWT where Wayne worked for the Government of Northwest Territories as a Community Planning Technologist. Wayne embraced the North and all it had to offer, learning a new culture and way of life. In 1991, Wayne and Linda moved to Yellowknife, NWT, where he continued his career with the Government. In 1995, Wayne retired from the GNWT and he pursued his passion for woodworking. Waylin Woodworks was established. When Linda retired in August 2006, they moved house, home and woodshop to Camrose, AB to be closer to their sons and grandchildren Parker, Morgan and Aidan. Wayne was actively involved with the Seniors Golf in Camrose, the Camrose Association for Community Living, the Canada 55+ Games and the Yellowknife Seniors Society. When his sons were young, Wayne was involved with Scouts Canada as well as coaching hockey and softball.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Linda; sons Derek (Donna) of Edmonton and Mark (Kerri) of Slave Lake; three grandchildren Parker, Morgan and Aidan; siblings Lloyd (Glenda), Terry (Geraldine), Kevin (Lisa) and Gail Jeffrey-Norris (Frank Norris). John was predeceased by his parents Clarence and Monica; brother-in-law Davis Jeffrey; and nephew Lloyd Sampson. "His infectious smile. His cheery voice. His hearty laugh." Wayne will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by his Community.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Joseph Jacobsen officiating.
