It was the Summer of 1969. It had been arranged that I would stay with Aunt Jessie and Alan at the farm. Alan drove me from Edmonton down to Duhamel. I'd never been in a car going anywhere near 80 miles-an-hour, and certainly not going that speed on the grass shoulder as Alan attempted to run over a hapless gopher. For a fifteen year-old West Coast guy, I was impressed! At the farm Alan gave me a quick tutorial on operating a tractor. I quickly punctured a hydralic hose. He didn't even get mad. He taught me how to shoot a rifle, though the gophers were safe...I guess he didn't like gophers. He even trusted me to drive the tractor again. I was hooked. He involved me in the bizarre world of animal husbandry, though I still have nightmares about the act of artificially inseminating cows. I spent one of the most important weeks of my life with him and, because of his low-key mentoring and matter-of-fact approach to everything, I am a more complete person. I now run our family's small farm and I often think of Alan when I run into a problem. He never even gave me a hard time when I bought my first tractor a few years back...an orange one! Unfortunately, I am not able to make it to the service. But on behalf of all the Smyths, I send our love and condolences to all. I bet there will be more than a few laughs! We. too, will miss Alan greatly.

I was sad to learn from Bev Ross that Alan passed away last Thursday. Alan was my partner on the provincial beef judging team that competed at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1949. He was an excellent judge of cattle, and it was probably his skills that resulted in our winning the national championship in Toronto that year. He placed first in the live judging and I placed first in the oral exam that was part of the competition. Together we were a very good team. I have many happy memories of our weeks of preparation for the competition and the the experiences of "The Royal" for two young farm boys from Alberta. (PS. Alan had to fudge on his age - "nearly 16" at the time - because team members had to be at least 16.) Ross Gould Calgary, Alberta
