Shirley Marie Johnson

(March 23, 1942 - December 17, 2019)

Shirley Marie Johnson of Camrose, Alberta passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at the age of 77 years after her seven year journey with cancer.

Shirley was born on March 23, 1942, to Margaret and Brian Davis of Rose Valley Saskatchewan. The third child of five, she lived with her family on the family farm. She attended a one room school until Grade Nine, then completed her high school in Rose Valley. She went on to receive an education degree which led her to Camrose, Alberta in 1965 where she taught elementary school and there she met her future husband Dennis. They married on August 24, 1968.
Dennis and Shirley started their family in 1974 with a beautiful baby boy Greg and completed it with the arrival of a spunky daughter Marnie in 1976. She took a break from teaching in order to care for her family and during this time she opened a craft store in downtown Camrose. Six years later, she returned to teaching Grade Two and Three. Among her fondest memories are teaching recorder, school field trips to the zoo and different creatures that she kept in the classroom. She had a special place in her heart for all her students. She retired in 1997 after teaching for a total of 28 years.

Shirley had a zest for life and took every opportunity to learn. After retiring from teaching she got her realtors license, her healthcare aid certificate and took numerous other courses. She loved to spend time with her family often visiting with her mother. She enjoyed her grandchildren spending countless hours babysitting, providing meals, teaching and supporting them through all the different phases of life … everything from practicing the alphabet to filling out college applications. Her home was always opened to them and she was always available to lend a helping hand and made it look effortless.
Shirley had an eye for detail and was a perfectionist with everything that she did. She was an avid quilter and gardener, loved decorating her home, spent time crafting, bird watching, and baking. Traveling was another of her passions that she enjoyed throughout her life. She travelled with friends as a young college girl, with family as a mother and after retirement with friends and family. She volunteered with the Grateful Grannies, at the Bailey Theatre and at her church when her health would allow.

Left to cherish Shirley’s memories are her loving husband Dennis; two children Greg (Angela) Johnson, and Marnie (Dallas) Barkman; grandchildren Chelsea and Tyler Barkman, Tristan Halverson, and Rylan and Kane Johnson. She is also survived by her siblings; Clarence (Pat) Davis, Jean (Andy) Prophet, Lorne (Linda) Davis, Gerry (Cathy) Davis and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Brian Davis and parents-in-law Elizabeth and Marvin Johnson.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 23, 2019 from the Messiah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Bev Swanson officiating. Interment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation - MMRF, or to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (the Grateful Grannies).
