We nick-named Uncle Gerald as the "Joke Book" because he was always telling one. Growing up on the family farm (Earl's youngest daughter) we helped our mom, Hilda, prepare the dinners when dad and the uncles were working during harvest.
Once Uncle Gerald put me in a mud puddle...I was so livid....I didn't set a place at the table that day for him. Mom told me that was not an option.
Later in life my husband, Dwayne, and I purchased Uncle Gerald's motorhome and travelled up to Alaska. It was wonderful trip!

Dear Uncle Gerald,
I remember a couple times when we were at a restaurant in Camrose. You and my girls were playing a straw and paper napkin wad game and blowing paper wads through the straws at each other across the table. There is roughly 70 years between you and my girls and yet it was so much fun! I remember my Mom scolding all 3 of you (you, Megan and Alie) and you responded ‘I haven’t had this much fun in years’! Another time, I remember you and Alie laughing and talking about Mr Bean shows “Did you see the one about ...? “ and then you would both laugh and laugh. I liked how despite the age difference, they had so much fun with you!
I remember your wedding. You parked your car at Aunt Edyth’s, and I was living there at that time. I called my dad to see if I could play a trick on you and he said to let the air out of the tires, but just a little. So I did. You thought it was Uncle Paul. Ella also asked me to help at your wedding and then she gave me a gift, a little coffee spoon, which I still have ‘ Ella & Gerald Nov.15 75’. I didn’t think I deserved a gift when I had played a trick on you. Haha
I loved our visits, we had some great talks and lots of laughter. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
We love you,
Kathryn Penn and Alie Penn

I do remember he bought the first little 70 cc honda motorcycle but left it across the road at Pauls and told me i could drive it when ever i wanted to just be careful with it. My first motorcycle i drove on. It was quite the scene also to see him when that big fellow was driving that little motorcycle. The strong guy who we got to pull on any wrench when any of us at the farm couldn’t get anything to turn.

My memories of Gerald include curling with him in several bonspiels, absolutely an excellent curler who always encouraged me when I missed a shot. I also recollect loading fertilizer out of rail cars at the Kelsey siding with the Zimmerman family. The bags weighed 80 pounds each. Gerald would pack 2 at a time without breaking a sweat while I struggled, huffed and puffed, barely handling one.
To me, Gerald was an all round gentleman and a pleasure to be around.

Oh Uncle Gerald! You were such a great guy! So glad we visited you there at Rosealta. The years at the Kelsey farm where we always stopped by for coffee after getting the mail. You guys....Earl, Mearl, Paul and you... always had time for coffee or MUCH watered down tea...and a game of Chicken or Dominoes. We (both couples) loved sharing our wedding month with you and Ella....February. The hunting stories...David has a few!! The twinkle in your eyes ... we will look for it in the skies...
