We were saddened to hear of Gene's passing. He was a central figure wherever he appeared, and this was especially true in Fort McMurray and the building of the United Church there. We wish to express our condolences to all of the family members. Love, Bonnie & Mel Giles

Continued from earlier: And always, it was the conversations and discussion of the importance of people being self-responsible for the future that we shared. Gene showed me how a dedicated, skilled builder like Gene can stay positive and focus on quality at all cost, and how that could make wonderful things happen. (I wasn't a good builder, he taught me a lot!). We supervised young people hired under youth grants at Engstrom camp, and I remember specifically how for what seemed like the 5th time, Gene restated adamantly but positively to the crew chief how trees needed to be cut real low to the ground to be safe and beneficial to all camp users in the future. His good intentions were well understood, and his adamancy for quality got followed because of that. Gene was a loyal friend, always making a point to touch base or call to drop by if in the neighbourhood, and bring something thoughtful along, often handmade. I remember us returning together to visit Ft. McMurray in the 1990's on a "boys trip" and how passionately and proudly he reconnected with people and the places that represented good in Ft. Mac. Gene has left a legacy of goodwill and well constructed facilities etc. that I will not forget and many will benefit from for generations to come. Gene...rest in peace....your Big Heart made me a better person and our world a better place. Thank you. Bernie Kreiner bernie.kreiner@shaw.ca 516 Carriage Lane Condos Hinton AB T7V 1K7 780-865-9355

I've known Gene since 1982 as we met thru Scouting and Guides in Ft. McMurray. I offer my condolences to Leone and all Gene's friends and family now and at the funeral Friday. I know Gene and those around him battled thru medical ailments more than many and in that sense.....life doesn't always seem fair. But I remember his character and strength through out his life most, and wish that everyone gathered together Friday will celebrate his wonderful, big-hearted contributions to us all. My reflections: Some people have a bigger, more constructive impact on the world around them than others, and that's how I see Gene. He was a big man with a big heart who acted on his convictions. I enjoyed talking and volunteering along side Gene. I know that his caring, thinking of "others first" approach rubbed off onto me some. I got to know Gene most in Ft. McMurray as we both were very active in the construction of the Engstrom Lake scout camp. He was always thinking big and for the betterment of others, in this case it was for the future youth who'd use the camp. And he insisted we didn't cut corners in building a first rate camp, and Gene definitely knew how to scrounge and cajole others to contribute to that vision. We spent many a day planning and organizing materials at his kitchen table, driving the 40 minutes to Engstrom and spending long, rewarding days building Engstrom Camp. cont'd Bernie Kreiner
