I’d like to share with you a special memory of your mother: Many years ago, when my eldest son was about three or four years old, your mother came to Calgary to visit family. Although my son had never met your mother before, he immediately climbed onto her lap and settled in for a nice long snuggle. I can still picture the two of them sitting on the couch and enjoying their time together. They say that children can intuit the character of those they meet and it was obvious that my son immediately sensed your mother’s warmth and maternal spirit. Sending my condolences for your loss. Thank you to the family for providing such a beautiful picture.
My father, Francis Spohn (brother) always enjoyed visiting with his sisters. I think he particularly enjoyed Bertha as he was a quiet reserved person and Bertha was able to hold an intense lively conversation together solely by the force of her personality.
I remember one spring day at our Aunt Tilley's , we were supposed to go back home to Saskatoon early in the day. My parents, Bertha/Isadore and Tilley and Ed, started to visit and it went on and on - it went on so long I was able to stay in the other room and watch the final Stanley cup game between St. Louis and Boston. That was the game where Bobby Orr finished the game with a goal where he went flying over the Goalie (Glen Hall) - and the photo of that moment has become a hockey icon. Every time I see that photo - I remember that visit.
To think - Dad missed a hockey game, left late for home - just to spend a few more minutes visiting Berta.
May God Bless and keep her family during this difficult time. I write this on the 100th anniversary of my own mothers birth, and reflect that even after a long productive life is over, we wish there could still be more. In the faith I share with Bertha and share with our ancestors, I pray that God will gather her into His life, and keep her in His love. May the Lord bless our lives till we someday join her when our journey here is done.
